Performance Characteristics:
The EFHW design balances portability and multi-band functionality, with trade-offs in efficiency compared to a dipole. Its 65 ft radiating element supports harmonic operation on 40m (1λ/2), 20m (2λ/2), 15m (3λ/2), and 10m (4λ/2). The 18 AWG wire and stainless steel hardware ensure durability and corrosion resistance, while the lightweight (14 oz) construction and compact storage (9" x 7" pouch) make it ideal for portable use. The antenna’s directional radiation pattern performs best in sloper or Inverted L configurations, delivering reliable QSOs up to 100 Watts SSB.
Applications:
Portable Operations: SOTA, POTA, and Field Day, with rapid setup and no-tune convenience.
Stealth Installations: Discreet design for HOA-restricted environments, etc.
Emergency Communications: Lightweight and robust for EmComm deployments.
Technical Specifications:
Frequency Coverage: 40m, 20m, 15m, 10m; no external tuner required due to harmonic resonances.
Impedance Matching: 49:1 transformer with a Fair-Rite FT140-43 toroid core, featuring a 2-turn primary bifilar winding for efficient power transfer across bands.
Radiating Elements: 2 Elements connected by bullet connector: ~32 ft (half wave at 20M) ~65 ft (half-wave at 40m) of 18 AWG UL 1007 stranded copper wire, optimized for flexibility, durability, and portability.
Enclosure Options:
Color/Connector choice Custom 3D-printed ASA weatherized enclosure (color options; BNC or SO-239).
Weight: ~14 oz (0.875 lbs), including all components, for ultra-portable operation.
Connectors: BNC or SO-239 (PL-259 compatible) female connector for coaxial feedline.
Grounding: Includes 8" grounding anchor and stainless steel ground lug; optional counterpoise recommended.
Radiation Pattern: Moderately directional, with primary lobes aligned with the antenna’s axis. Effective with 10-15W input power (field results shown on K2CJB Radio and Outdoors on the Air YouTube channels).
Deployment Configurations:
Supported Topologies: Sloper, Inverted L, Inverted V, vertical, zig-zag, or rhombic, adaptable to environmental constraints.
Installation Requirements: Elevate the matching unit 8-12 inches above ground to minimize losses. Maximize the height of the radiating element’s far end for optimal radiation efficiency.
Counterpoise: Optional, user-supplied counterpoise enhances performance, especially on 10m.
